Audience Development Resources

Here are resources to help you develop your audience.

Platforms to build community

There are a large number of very-well designed platforms which help build communities. If your audience is already frequenting a platform, I’d suggest developing your relationship within that platform, and then branching out into others if necessary. For example using a Facebook group, and then linking from there to your YouTube channel.

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Tik-Tok
  • LinkedIn
  • Youtube
  • Twitch
  • Forum
  • Slack

There are multiple ways in which you can engage your audience on these platforms:

Help
Answer questions thoroughly you see in the community. Research your responses well and get back to the community quickly with your answer.

Competitions
Try running simple competitions, encouraging growth in the community or deeper engagement. The prizes can be related to your product (free / discount), or even vouchers or other products. Asking people to invite others to join the community, as a means of entering the competition is often an effective way to grow quickly.

Content
A very broad term, also discussed in raising awareness early, relies on creating well-targeted, high-quality information is a proven way to engage and build your audience.

Mediate conversations
Pose big questions to your audience, ask them to discuss their feelings or experiences about a subject. Make sure to mediate and ensure healthy conversation, and avoiding conflict.

Surveys
Run surveys or ask people to vote on different subjects. People enjoy voicing their opinions and seeing what other people think about issues.

Raising awareness early

Some of the most successful products and services create high-quality content to engage and connect with their audience. Doing this before your product is created is a shortcut to success. This is an incredibly effective and efficient way of developing a strong relationship. Check out Gary Vee and his approach to content and brand, for expert guidance. You can start here.

Discussing the subjects around the problem you’re solving, the industry, experiences, expert insights etc are all great ways to target your efforts in creating good content.

By raising awareness of your product (even before it’s built), you’ll learn constantly from the people you seek to serve (users), and can encourage them to join a community, as well as try your product.

Make sure to engage your audience with types of content they want. If your audience commute, try a podcast, or if they're likely to engage at work, write an article.

Try some of these common ways in which people create content:

  • Guest authoring
  • Medium articles
  • Blog
  • Podcast
  • Video
  • Infographic
